So… what is body liberation coaching, exactly?

great question!

Most people hire a personal trainer for help with motivation and accountability. Perhaps you’ve had some experience with this ;)

This classic story takes different forms, but it always boils down to some version of this:

“I just won’t move/exercise/do it on my own, so I need someone else to hold me accountable.”

And so trainer is brought in to help you override to the internal resistance that is keeping you from doing the thang.

I used to provide that service.

I don’t anymore.

Body Liberation Coaching is about restoring trust between you and your body.

This will be a journey of unlearning & relearning

  • Relearning to trust your instincts and impulses.

  • Unlearning the narrative that our bodies need to be controlled.

  • Re-Learning to speak the language of your physical sensations.

  • Unlearning the narrative that you must push past your internal resistance.

I want to partner with you to cultivate your body autonomy.

Together we will co-create a brave space in which you can

…investigate and interrogate the stories that are fueling the resistance to moving your body.

…be with the resistance long enough that you are able to hold compassion for where it’s coming from, and transmute it

…tune in to your body’s unique language of sensations to find your embodied YES and NO

…unleash your genuine movement desires

…playfully try on new ways of moving that feel holistically supportive to you

If all of this sounds juicy to you, let’s chat about what working together could look like!

But is body liberation for me?

All bodies are worthy of love and deserve to feel free. Full Stop.

  • Starting is so tough.

There are so many things competing for our attention — work, kids, family, home-tending, ADULTING in general. It’s really hard to protect time for ourselves and our bodies. Even if you do manage to snag a quick half hour for a movement sesh… Then there is the UNCERTAINTY of What To DO.

I can help you sort through the murk and get moving.

We are inundated with messages from news and social media about which workout is the most effective. It’s almost like there are too many choices, and then we end up picking… none of them. If this is you, you aren’t alone. I am here to help you sort through all of the information about workouts & exercise routines that has piled up over the years. We will toss out what no longer serves you, and leave you with a streamlined menu of options that all sound dee-licious and totally do-able.

  • Let me tell you a secret: I’m not a “gym person” either!

Most of my clients have felt intimidated by the idea of going to a gym to lift weights. Guess what? You can get stronger without tip toeing around the bicep bros in the weight room.

I can help you learn how to strength train at home, with minimal equipment.

You’ll be amazed how little it takes to wake up your muscles and invite them to the party! That being said, if you DO want to walk into a weight room with confidence, we can work on building the knowledge and mindset that will help you breeze in and out of any gym, bolstered by your own understanding of what YOUR body needs.

  • This struggle is so real.

When we have punished ourselves with exercise to fix our perceived “not enoughness” it’s really hard to rebuild trust and re-imagine a positive relationship with exercise. I know this one from my own lived experience, as well as supporting hundreds of humans over the last 14+ years I’ve been working in the fitness industry.

See, I was once the queen of striving The Hardest to fix my body through exercise.

The only time I ever got on a treadmill regularly to do cardio was during THE MOST eating-disordered time in my life. I was in a hate-hate relationship with my body and I straight up punished myself with those treadmill sessions (cue angsty emo playlist.)

I can help you re-write your relationship with exercise and reclaim movement in a way that feels holistically supportive, not punitive.

It takes time and practice, but it is totally possible.

Helping people alchemize their relationship with exercise is one of the things I love most about my work with clients!

But this is a really common question! There’s good chance this work will be transformative for you if you relate to any of the following experiences:

I would love to have an explorative & curious conversation about what working together could look like.

FAQ

  • Not exactly.

I first certified as a personal trainer in 2010, I then added a Pilates certification in 2012, then Kettle Bells and TRX in 2013. I became a Functional Range Conditioning mobility specialist and Kinstretch instructor in 2018.

So yes, movement instruction is a skill set I bring to our process.

But generally people hire a trainer because they have resistance to moving their bodies. Hiring a trainer is a way to override that resistance and “make yourself” do it anyway.

Because I am devoted to body liberation for all beings, I’m no longer willing to “make you do it anyway.”

I am deeply excited to co-create a safe container in which we can explore that resistance together, with the intention of untangling its hold on you.

Together we will craft a movement practice that is unique to you, feels good for your body & soul, and supports your body to adapt in the ways that are important to YOU.

  • This really varies!

Each time we meet, we will tailor the session to your present needs for support. In general, we’ll do some combination of these three elements:

    1. Grounding Practice: a short guided meditation (some moving, some stillness) to invite you into the present moment, and to facilitate connection to the body, as it is right now.

    2. Coaching: checking in about how your practice is going, offering support on any blocks or sticky points. Unraveling the stories that are keeping you from moving joyfully and loving your body.

    3. Movement Learning: I’ll teach you movements to support and nourish your body. This is where it really varies! We might learn a sequence to strengthen your knee or ease a tight cranky shoulder, or we might learn to deadlift or do a pull up! We might explore task-based movement scenarios that settle the nervous system or unlock creativity. Again, it all depends on the needs & desires of your body & being.

  • It depends. 1:1 Coaching containers include 2 sessions per month, but we can slide things around within the 3 or 6 month container if you need more frequent support at the beginning of our adventure together.

  • We will connect over zoom for our sessions, unless you live near enough to Oakland, CA to make meeting up in person possible.

I recommend, if it’s possible, to set up your laptop in the space where you plan to do your movement practice.

This way as you learn new movements, they will already be mapped to your environment. This saves you a lot of mental translation later.

  • At the beginning, no.

That being said, I’m happy to advise you on key items that will support your practice. I’m generally a fan of less-is-more, and most of my clients are amazed at what we can do with a yoga mat’s worth of floor space, a sturdy chair, and my creativity and exercise knowledge.

  • I did some research to find out what other personal trainers with my level of experience charge here in the SF Bay Area, where I live. Then I looked at what therapists and somatic healing coaches charge. I set my 1-1 rate in between, because the work I do blends these two worlds.

  • No. I know this is a thing that a lot of coaches and trainers do, but I recently realized that it rewards people who have money and punishes those who have not been able to accumulate wealth. It’s important to me to transmute Capitalism wherever possible, in service of a more equitable world.

I do offer a set number of sliding scale spots. My ability to do this depends on how many clients I have on board paying in full, which means that the availability for these spots varies. If you need sliding scale rates, please mention it when you fill out the form to book a discovery call.
